Progress in Treating Mental Illness – Medication Management at Haven House

Medication adherence is particularly problematic in individuals with chronic mental health conditions.
We all know how difficult it can be to remember to take medications exactly as prescribed, taking them
on time, with food or without food, etc. It is estimated that only 35% of clients diagnosed with bipolar
disorder or schizophrenia take their medications exactly as prescribed.

This creates a significant risk for symptom relapses and hospitalizations. At Haven House, our clients with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and schizoaffective disorder have the option of receiving a long-acting injectable medication that is administered in our office every two, four, six, eight, or twelve weeks, depending on what works best for them.

This reduces the need for daily medication and the significant need to be 100% consistent in taking it as prescribed. Offering these injections improves our clients’ psychiatric stability, therefore, it also improves their health and quality of life.

Your Wellness is Your Overall Being

Ellen and Chantel are part of our Wellness Recovery Team program that serves to improve the health of high-risk individuals with severe chronic mental and physical health illnesses. Chantel is a Behavioral Health Navigator and is working with Ellen to address her complex health issues. One of Ellen’s goals is to learn self-care skills to better manage her healthcare providers, medications, and overall health.

She stops in the middle of her day to call Chantel – “I need to tell her my blood pressure numbers are lower! She is always after me to drink more water, and less coffee or soda; it’s better for my blood pressure.” Ellen has medical appointments 2-3 times per week. She is in constant pain. But, as she says, “It doesn’t keep me down. I like to keep busy!”

Improving Ellen’s pain is just one piece of her health, but one that works for hand in hand with her mental health. Chantel says “when one declines the other falls behind”. Less pain reduces her stress and anxiety symptoms significantly. Ellen believes Chantel and the Wellness Recovery Team are really helping her to make progress and improvements in her health. They are quite a team!
